    Cash money business.

    By rob at 9:12 pm

As some of you might have heard, tonight we’re paying out a whole bunch of money to the community.

    One-hundred-sixteen thousand, three-hundred sixty-nine dollars and sixty-seven cents ($116,369.67) to be exact.

Tomorrow when you wake up (provided you live in a US timezone) take a look at your Quirky account balance. You might be pleasantly surprised by what you find!

As orders from retail partners (and the associated payments from said retail partners) continue to roll in, expect to see more blockbuster pay days like this one in the near future.

We’ve been getting a lot of questions from inventors and community members asking what they can do to help generate retail interest in products. We love the enthusiasm and persistence coming from the community, but it’s important to abide by some guidelines to make sure that you do more good than harm.

It is imperative that all retail discussions begin and end with Chad. As Quirky’s Head of Sales, it’s his responsibility to form strategic partnerships with retailers and to pitch them not just individual products, but the entire Quirky brand and story.

If you have a personal relationship with someone at a major retailer, you have Chad’s permission to email him directly (CC questions@quirky.com to keep us in the loop) with the contact details of your connection. Once you hand off that information, Chad will for sure reach out to them. Do not incessantly email Chad just to say “I think Quirky should be in Walmart.”

If you do not have a personal relationship with someone at a major retailer, it’s best to leave all communication with Chad.

So, what can you as a community member do to generate retail interest since big-box retailers are off limits?

There are tons of small stores, mom and pop shops, out there that aren’t on our radar. Feel free to have a conversation with them about Quirky. Explain the process, give examples of products, and if they’re interested, have them reach out to us. Do not misrepresent yourself as an employee of Quirky.

Also, understand that we do not offer commission or influence for bringing in retail partners. If you are reaching out to local businesses it should be because you want to share the Quirky story and will do anything to get the word out to benefit the entire community… not because you are looking to make a quick buck.

Retail relationships present huge opportunities for Quirky and the Quirky community. Remember that these relationships don’t necessarily happen overnight, and that, while your heart might be in the right place, some things are better left for the professionals. If you consider the fact that in just about one year we went from being in 17 retail store fronts to being in over 6,000, I think you’ll agree that we’re on the right track.

    Hello Retail

By ben kaufman at 7:45 pm

Today was a big day. Quirky’s first big shipment left the warehouse headed to an (unfortunately still unnamed) national retailer.

Sure, we’re excited about going to retail… but BEYOND that how could we not be excited about how sexy these boxes look?

We’re getting ready to announce who our new partners are and will (hopefully) share the news with you in the coming weeks. The hold up has been in trying to structure a major announcement and break the news in a major publication. Leaking it to the community might damage the chances of us getting the media excited about “the scoop”.

More to come. Until then….. MAZEL TOV!

Thank you to our community, staff, and partners around the world who have made today possible. Major milestone. But only the beginning.

    I’m going to bed.

    Hey Quirks,

Art Nithipat Thansrikiat is one of our international distribution partners. A big thanks to him for getting Quirky products in Apple-related magazines and Central Retailers locations across Thailand.

We are pleased to announce the launch of quirky’s wholesale and retail network. With the roll out of the W&RN we will immediately begin scaling up the amount of units sold during  both the pre-sale and sales phase of our projects (read: we’ll all make more money).   That said, there is enormous benefit in getting involved as a wholesaler & retailer, as noted below:

As a quirky wholesaler, you’ll be notified as soon as a new product hits our store (so expect a notification every few days). If you want to become known as a pioneer and not just a “buyer” … you’ll have to move quick.

WholesaleIf you see potential in a product, you can cash in on your intuition. To do so, place an order in quirky’s pre-sale phase—this earns you influence in the product. Once we move into production, that influence earns you a perpetual royalty on the product.

That’s right, now every time someone buys the product—whether it be at your store, or your competitor’s store—you’re cashing in. How great is that?

Want in on the wholesale action? Shoot an email to businesstime@quirky.com to let us know how you can help get our products to the masses.
