    Hey Quirks,

My name is Matt Fleming and I have been an enthusiastic fellow-Quirk (on and off) for about two years.

My passion, frustration, faith, and hope about Quirky led me to pitch my services to Ben around the time he happened to be seeking Invention Ambassadors (IA), soon after I met with Ben again when I was in town for Sundance filming.  Since I could only work part-time, and not in NYC, I wasn’t eligible for the IA position.  So I convinced them that I could serve as a Community Liaison.  They agreed to give me a shot as a consultant/contractor in this capacity.

I plan to dialogue with the IAs, and communicate summaries and updates back to the Quirky community, via blog and video postings.

I also plan to constantly listen to you, the community: your input, gripes, hopes, wants.  I intend to accurately distill and clarify the community sentiment, and communicate this directly to Quirky and Ben, ensuring that we are heard, understood, and responded to.  I hope you will all help me continue to anticipate and identify problems with Quirky, and brainstorm solutions; I hope we can also highlight what is working well, and feed those parts.

Like Quirky itself, my position will evolve and change rapidly.  This will be influenced by what is best for the community and Quirky. Talk to me. I will listen.

To tell me what you want and need from Quirky and the community, please post a video response to my youtube video, post in the relevant forum threads, and/or email me directly at matt@quirkyinc.com.  Let’s engage together in social PROCESS development.

    Quirkily yours,

    Matt

    Meet Sally

    By rob at 2:00 pm

We’re thrilled to introduce Sally Rumble, a product design veteran, as QDS’ Senior Industrial Designer.

Sally brings more than a decade of industrial design experience with world-class brands to Quirky’s design team. What drew her to Quirky was the notion of abandoning the ‘ivory tower’ where old design business models lie and jumping into the trenches to collaborate with the people.

Most recently, Sally was the Vice President of Product Design at BUILT NY, a Manhattan-based company that designs fashionable and functional totes, bags, and cases. She spent four years at Smart Design as an Industrial Designer, where she designed products for companies like OXO International, Hewlett Packard, Lego, Schick, Bic, and Tiffany’s.

Incredibly adaptable, Sally has lived in almost every neighborhood in NYC and prefers to watch the art unfold on the streets rather than pay to see it.  When she’s not at work, she can be found wandering the streets of her beloved Brooklyn, singing in a gospel choir or in a local bar attempting to solve the worlds problems with friends. She holds a Bachelors of Industrial Design from the University of Canberra in Australia, and her latest focus is on collaborative consumption, design for social impact, and DIY lighting design.

The team here at Quirky is pumped to throw down! This week, there is no brief for the community. In its place, staff members will get to submit their own product ideas. Next week, we’ll open the Staff Submission round up for community evaluation. The community votes and ratings will weigh a lot more heavily into our decision than in normal rounds. To prevent any favoritism (cuz I know you’d all just vote for me, right?), submissions will be anonymous and team members have agreed not to out themselves as the ideator of a submission.

We will conduct DMV research as usual on the top 5 voted ideas. Ideally, we’ll present that research to the community, and make the “staff evaluation” into a final voting round for the community. We’ll working out the details now.

Have a wonderful holiday, and if you’re international, go ahead and take the day off too!

During our weekly staff evaluation of product ideas, we focus on exploring three main areas: Design, Market, and Viability. Each of these areas gets a score out of 10, which gets added to the Community and Staff scores to result in the final rating.

So what exactly goes into the DMV scores? Here’s a list of the questions we consider, right from the people who consider them.

DESIGN SCORE (10) Gaz, Brian, Jordan, and the QDS

    - Does the submission solve a problem? How “important” a problem does it solve? How many people are affected by this problem?

    - Does the submission propose a strong solution? Or is it just “feature creep” (combining more and more features to give the impression of improved problem solving)? Usually there is a tipping point where the increased feature set inhibits the product’s ability to solve the original problem.

    - Is it unique to the market? Does it have “wow factor”?

    - Will the finished product be innovative? Does it explore the “adjacent possible”? In other words, does it push the culture of objects forward by combining/transferring wide-reaching ideas, thought, materials, etc. to reach new and interesting outcomes? To read about “adjacent possible” and other innovation-related themes, get a copy of Steven Johnson’s Where Good Ideas Come From, it’s frickin’ fantastic.

    - How interesting is it going to be for the community to work on? How many opportunities will there be to explore?

    - Could the finished product potentially win design awards?

MARKET SCORE (10) Chad, Matt, and Garret

    Marketability

    - Is it easy to demonstrate and explain?

    - What is the immediate impact of the idea on customers (“wow factor”)?

    - Is it a must-have? Would you see it and want to buy it then and there?

    - Is the solution still relevant?

    - Would you tell your friends about it?

    Market Size

    - Does it solve a common problem? Does the solution appeal to lots of people across several demographics?

    - If it’s a very targeted product, does a scalable business opportunity exist?

    - Is it unique?

    Competitive Edge

    - What is the competitive landscape?

    - How unique are the features to the marketplace?

    - Is the Viability team price point competitive?

    Fit with Sales Channels

    - Does it have U.S. mass retail potential?

    - Does the product work abroad and can it sell through channels internationally?

    - Does the product appeal to our site visitors?

    Fit with Product Mix

    - Does it complement existing products?

    - Does it directly compete with existing products?

    Shelf Talk

    - How many SKUs? How many colors?

    - Can it be easily described on the packaging?

    - Where would it sit on a retail floor/shelf?

    - Will it grab your attention or will it just get lost?

    - Would it be promotion worthy?

VIABILITY SCORE (10) John, Nikki, Paul in Hong Kong, and The Suits (lawyers)

    Manufacture-ability

    - Can we make this product?

    - Do we have existing suppliers who can make it?

    - If we do not have existing suppliers, how hard do we think it will be to find the right supplier?

    - Will we be able to make this with consistent quality and function over time?

    Costs

    - What do products with similar functions retail for?

    - Given the competitive landscape, will we be able to make this product stand out on a cost-competitive basis?

    - How much space at retail will the product require?

    - Are there special shipping considerations? (heavy, large space, etc.)

    Legal

    - Are there certain regulations that we will need to follow? UL listings?

    - What does the patent landscape look like?

    - What is our patent infringement risk? Is this too similar to an existing product/patent?

    - What is the likelihood that we will be able to get patent protection for this product?

One final note: While these questions can help you get a sense of your idea’s potential on Quirky, don’t let them discourage you from submitting an idea that doesn’t have a positive answer to every question. We ask these questions to make sure that we can responsibly bring an idea to life. Innovation can come from surprising places, so we promise to stay open-minded!

Missed today’s Town Meeting? Don’t worry… we recorded it for your viewing pleasure. See how thoughtful we are?

Hiya Quirks! Whew, what a week it’s been. TGIF! By the chance that you don’t already have thrilling plans for the weekend, why not take a hobby cue from the Quirky staff?

Who knew that  patient and smiley Shirley had an artistic streak? She often makes mobiles for new mom friends and dipped into paper basket-weaving for a short time this spring.

Working for a social product development sure is inspiring, but it’s not enough to make Garret follow through with his shoemaking obsession. Instead, he spends his free time scouring shoe design books and sites.

Our favorite Brit, Gaz, was a gentle musician last year… a cellist, to be exact. In the past few months, he’s picked up a more aggressive hobby — knocking down walls in his Jersey City house.

And if you still find yourself bored with some time on your hands, look toward Nikki‘s favorite things to do outside of the office: eating ice cream or frozen yogurt every single day and enjoying a mixture of two cereals most days a week (but never the same cereals on consecutive days… she keeps at least eight boxes in her apartment at all times). Or, there’s always building up a hotel key card collection from around the world… Nikki loves decorating her walls with ‘em.

Yep, there’s a reason this bunch works here. Have a quirky weekend, everyone!
