For the past few days, the Quirky Design Staff has been alternating shifts in the window display of Bed Bath & Beyond on 6th Avenue here in New York. There they sketched solutions to everyday problems tweeted at us from people all over the world. Well it wasn’t just for fun, it was actually the beginning of a week long Quick’n'Quirky!

In case you’re unfamiliar with the Quick’n'Quirky concept, what we do is take the Quirky process and condense it into an amazingly short amount of time.

Yesterday, at the conclusion of the three-day sketchathon, we chose five ideas out of the hundreds that were sketched, ran a DVM analysis, and did a one-off mid-week evaluation. The result? Say hello to Product 177: Cooler with beach umbrella attachment.

The problem was identified and tweeted by Quirky designer Sally Rumble. This being the case, the 50% of influence typically reserved for Ideation will be spread out across remaining phases, including Research, Design, Branding and Presales. That means that there’s a ton of influence up for grabs over the next few days.

We’ve just launched the Research and and Concept phases for this product, which will last for 24 hours. If necessary we will have a Refine phase, but given the aggressive timeline we’re working on, we’re not planning on it. Tomorrow we will be kicking off the Naming and Tagline phases, and this Sunday night (possibly in the middle of a hurricane) we’re going to launch the product, live in the window of Bed Bath & Beyond.

    To recap:

    Today: Research and Concept

    Tomorrow: Naming and Tagline

    Sunday: Product Launch for presales.

    You better get moving!

We did it, Quirks! Over 24 hours, our staff and community rallied together to design and develop one brand new product… Stem Garden: Fresh Herbs In Your Kitchen. It was madness, man. There were heated arguments and tough decisions and delirious conversations about Chinese terra cotta warriors. But in the end, we actually pulled this thing off! We’re psyched about the new product.

    Stem Garden

    Fresh Herbs In Your Kitchen

Grow fresh herbs by any windowsill with Stem Garden, an elegant indoor/outdoor planting system designed over 24 hours by Quirky’s global community of influencers. This product’s unique design was inspired by the refined simplicity of champagne flutes.

    In addition, Stem Garden features:
    – Bendable goose-neck “stems” that allow you to position your plants most effectively for direct sunlight, without moving the entire unit.
    – Removable terra-cotta cups, for easy planting and maintenance.
    – Removable terra-cotta drip pan, which allows for easy disposal of excess water.
    – Internal overflow protection system that allows excess water to drip down the removable planter cups through the stem into the included drip pan (subject to further design feasibility review).

This product will also come with an easy-to-use herb starter kit, with a variety of seeds and a set of simple instructions.

    And now… off to bed.

What a day.  I’m way over the 24 hour mark here at the office, and suddenly i just looked around and realized i’m the only one left… besides for a sketchy camera dude snoring on our couch.

The designers JUST left.  I cannot believe how efficiently we worked in completing all aspects of todays tasks.  Thank god I can communicate via keyboard right now because i have absolutely no voice left.

Any minute now, Jess & Nikki who left at around 1:30 or so are going to be trickling their way back into the office to take the deliverables that the design team passed off and get those ready for launch.  Now that we have all the assets and all the major decisions have been made its about packaging up all the specs we’ve defined, writing copy, getting email launch blasts teed up, doing pricing / threshold research & diligence,  loading it all up on the site, and getting everything ready for a simulateous push at 9am.

Also, mike lacy will have to get back here pretty soon and remove the QNQ banners / bumpers so people aren’t confused.

All systems are looking like a go at this point.  I am beyond beat but must see this thing through to the end.

I have to say that we really accomplished something really great here on many levels.   I think the product turned out phenomenally from a design & function standpoint given the idea that was chosen… I feel that the community influence & contributions were HUGE and the single biggest driver of us being able to do what we did today.

Another product will be launched shortly, excited to see how it performs in pre-sales.  I encourage all of you to share your thoughts on today, like we have come to expect. :)

Ok, i think i’m rambling. So.

    rock.

We’re still chugging along here at Quirky HQ, thanks to a magical combination of Illy Issimo and leftover ‘wichcraft cookies from our open house.

We just finished up an hour-long conversation on industrial design — pretty grueling. We decided to take it old school and use physical sketches/print-outs and Post-Its to cast our votes. In the end, the CHAMPAGNE design won.

We’re pumped. This design is functional, elegant, and unlike anything on the market, and we’re all set to class this baby up.

Here’s an idea of what the rest of the night will look like:

    11:30pm-12:30am — NAMING

    12:30am-7am — TAGLINE + LOGO

    7am-9am — FINAL DESIGN RENDERING

    9am — PRODUCT LAUNCH!

  • Tue, Apr 13 2010

We just launched our product research phase, and we’re figuring out the rest of the night’s schedule as we go.

Right now, here’s what we’ve got:

At 9 p.m., we’ll close our product research phase and open up the industrial design phase/s. Right now, we’re thinking we’ll be able to close the design phase/s at 12 midnight and get into the nitty gritty of names, taglines, and logos.

As per our forum discussion earlier, we’re still undecided about whether we should go with one or two phases on this project. We’ll make that decision shortly and let you know!

    Austin Kerr-Valentic‘s Stackable Herb Garden!

This idea was the community favorite, and we’re excited to get the ball rolling on fleshing out the details.

Truth be told, while we love this idea, we do have some concerns…

    1. Competitive landscape. There are several herb planters on the market. How can we make ours cooler?

    2. Usability. The way the product was presented, only the top of the stack would get light. How would the others be able to grow?

    3. Design. How would we be able to combine form and function in one groovy, compact case?

Start thinking about these issues as we delve into the industrial design for this product. And stay tuned for product research questions, which we’re currently discussing with our in-house community members. AND while you’re at it, grab some coffee. It’s gonna be a long night!

Hey folks! Product evaluation is about to open up — are y’all ready to filter through SIX pages of product ideas? It’ll be a rough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Some updates on today’s big event:

    - Because of the massive number of idea submissions, we’ll be allotting each community member TEN votes, instead of the regular three. Hopefully, this will make it easier for you all to indicate which ideas you think are winners.

    - By popular request, we’ve decided to EXTEND the product evaluation phase by one hour. So instead of having two hours to evaluate ideas, you’ll have three. You’re welcome.

    - At 6 p.m., the team will meet up to decide which product Quirky’ll be developing. After that decision is made, we’ll rework the rest of the night’s schedule accordingly.

Two minutes to go… get ready, get set.

  • Tue, Apr 13 2010

Quick & Quirky is moving full speed ahead. Submissions have only been open for a couple of hours, and already we have FOUR PAGES of submissions. Craziness! We’re excited.

Just a reminder, if you want immediate answers to questions or concerns, reach out! As usual, we’re available on the blog, Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail… but we’ve added Skype (quirkyinc) and AIM (wearequirky) to that list. Or, if you’re in the area, stop on by our HQ between 5 and 10 p.m. to witness the magic first-hand!

    QNQ FAQ

    By jess at 5:15 pm

It’s a busy day at Quirky HQ as we gear up for tomorrow’s Quick & Quirky, our (somewhat) monthly attempt to accomplish the impossible… develop an entire product in 24 hours. This time around, our community and team will join together to create the ULTIMATE gardening/rainy weather product.

We’ll be kicking off the festivities at 9 a.m. EST and working ’round the clock until the following day. The process will be just like our regular product development cycle… but on turbo speed. Confused? Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

    Wait, so what just happened?

All of our regular Quirky activities and projects will continue as usual. This is a separate event, and the result will be handled as a separate product.

What if my idea isn’t gardening or weather-related?

We’re still taking those too! Head on over to our regular product submission page <https://www.quirky.com/ideas/new> and submit your idea there.

    How do I participate?

Either submit your own product idea, or contribute and weigh in on the other phases of development, like industrial design, naming, tagline, and logo design.

    Why participate?

Unlike other Quirky development projects, submitting your idea to a Q&Q is free! Plus, we’re attempting to completely develop a product in just 24 hours… need we say more? Ok, we will. Participation earns you influence (a perpetual royalty on the product) which in turn translates to cold, hard cash.

    Why are you doing this?

    We LIVE for this.

How will I know when to join in?

Around 9 a.m., check out your inbox for an e-mail announcement with a link to the day’s schedule. It’ll be a rough one, so load up on Sugar Free Red Bull, make a Whole Foods run for brain food, forge that doctor’s note for work… do whatever you’ve gotta do. See y’all bright and early!

Oh, and don’t forget to RSVP.

It’s spring… a time for renewal, rebirth, and lots and lots of rain. What better way to get into the spirit of the season than by putting on those thinking caps for another Quick & Quirky?

That’s right, Quirks, it’s time for the Quick & Quirky throwdown you’ve all been waiting for.

The big date is April 14!

The theme this time ’round is April Showers Bring May Flowers. We’ll be looking for products related to weather, gardening, and gardening in various types of weather conditions.

For those of you new to Q&Q, here’s the gist:

Over 24 hours, the community and staff will come together to comprehensively develop one new product. Why? ‘Cause we can (and from time to time we like to show off).

We’re not gonna lie… the schedule’s gonna be rough. It’ll probably look a lil’ something like our last Q&Q:

It’ll be just like those all-nighters in college… but FUN!

We’ll post more details soon, but for now, get brainstorming.
