Split Stick Classic was the very first product Quirky ever manufactured, and she was looking, well, a little outta date. So we decided to give her a makeover. Now she’s back as product 101, and she’s lighter, sturdier, and better-looking than ever. Truth be told, the catcalls are getting a little outta control. We really can’t blame them; that’s one hot double-sided USB stick.

    Split Stick 2.0 features:

    - Two separate, retractable 4GB USB drives built into one slim 8GB stick.
    – Lightweight plastic construction — barely weighs anything!
    – Plastic tab for easily extracting and retracting the two sides of the drive.
    – Built-in lanyard loop, so you can attach your Split Stick anywhere.
    – Available in black, with decorative home/work graphics on either side of the stick.

We’ve run across a few issues with our mass-production run of the split stick.     We’ve been back and forth with our manufacturer over the past few days identifying issues, and working to resolved them quickly.

    Known issues:

-The slider nub, in some cases becomes dislodged from what is supposed to be a one way snap. (due to poor tolerancing)

-In a few cases- The spring mechanism has varying rigidity and can get stuck. Making it quite difficult to slide from side to site, and often causing issue number one (above)

This is a huge disappointment to us, and  split sticks factory is taking full responsibility for the poor consistency.     They have already fixed these issues and are in the process of re-producing the units and getting us a fresh batch.

That said, we are also taking full responsibility, and have worked diligently with those who have sent notes to tiny dino regarding their split stick to have a replacement overnighted to them free of charge.

As i said before, we’re working hard at this and this product will get the justice it deserved. Anyone unhappy with their first production run unit shouldn’t worry– just send us a note and we’ll get you all fixed up.

One further note-  as a result of this issue, we’ve implemented a process with a 3rd party Quality Assurance company which is on the ground at our factories testing 100% of the new units being produced both for split stick, and the others which are due out in just a few weeks.

In just a few moments, all of those who pre-ordered a split stick will receive an email with instructions on how to choose their color/etch & complete their order. Orders completed this weekend will all ship out on Monday. A few important notes:

    1. Pink is backordered through mid-month
    2. Payouts will begin taking place mid-week next week (to allow for all pre-orders to be completed)
    3. Your influence in split stick may grow (you’ll see in influence bonus on your page), if some who pre-orderd their product do not claim their units– we are allowing 10 days for order completion before doing an influence audit.
    4. All SplitStick pre-orders will ship complementary FedEx, becasue we’re that excited about getting you your product
    5. If you have second thoughts, you can cancel your order– but you’ll forfeit your influence

Thats all from us, we’re going to spend the weekend packing boxes.  Horray!

    Hello Faithful Quirks.

I have some news.  I made a video to share this news with you, however i dragged on for 4 minutes of jetlagged induced enthusiasm.  Most of you won’t listen to a 4 minute video– so here is what you need to know.

    1. I’m in Hong Kong
    2. The Split Stick is very awesome
    3. I ate dim sum today

I suppose you want more detail?  Fine!

    1. The Split Stick is now production approved, and I have a few in my possession
    2. The colors to start will be dark gray, orange, and pink (others will follow shortly thereafter)
    3. We doubled the memory capacity of the product from 2×2 to 4×4. You heard right…. 8 GIGABYTES TOTAL. That’s some large black bean curd, people.
    4. The packaging is kick-ass, and carries marc’s photo along with the names of all 377 splitstick influencers
    5. The factory will begin shipping to the US within the next 5-7 days, and then we will turn around and ship things to you within a few days of receiving them to our office/warehouse.
    6. You’ll be able to choose your etching prior to shipment
    7. I ate dim sum today
    8. I’m awfully redundant.

    Until I return,

    Ben

When we started quirky we thought it would be fantastic if we were able to produce all of our products locally.    But just like any startup business, plans change due to circumstances.

When the split-stick hit threshold a few weeks back, we immediately knew sourcing a memory-based product in the US would be a tough task.  That, above & beyond meeting our promise to deliver the a quality product to customers within 8 weeks.  Oy.

Luckily, we were able to find a manufacturer in china who was able to meet our demands on quality and timeframe, and began working with them immediately.

Our desire to transition manufacturing back to the US is a very strong one.   It requires an incredible amount of speed and quality on behalf of the manufacturer, something we are willing to pay a reasonable premium for.

If you are a manufacturer anywhere in the world and love what we’re doing and think you can keep up… let us know.

Keith (our lead engineer) and I are boarding a plane to Hong Kong in a few hours and will provide a few video updates for you along the way.    Splitstick has just finished tooling and is going into production/assembly this week (which we will be  there to oversee) and Digidude has a production ready prototype which I will share with you later in the week.

Things are really coming along.   We’d appreciate hearing your thoughts on our decision  – Ben

Ahoy!   We’re rockin’ out early on a Sunday morning here at Quirky HQ…..

Quirky, Marc Zech of Split Stick fame, and the Digidude are all featured quite prominently in todays New York Times Magazine.   You can read the article right here on the interwebs,  or run out to your local starbucks and grab a copy.

nytimesSo, welcome to any new eyeballs that have found our little website from the Times… Thank you to Rob Walker for the great coverage, and congratulations to the entire community for the work done thus far– and the work about to be done in the coming weeks and month.

This should be a super fun week coming up, we have something interesting planned– not sure if it will work as good as it sounds in my cabeza, but we’ll give it a go anyway.
