Big news on the Splash Stacks front: on January 13th, we made the decision to stop manufacturing the product as it was designed. Despite the hard work of our Asia staff, sourcing team, and manufacturing partners abroad, there were several production issues that prevented certain features of the design from moving forward. The result was a dilution of the overall design, making it less useful and not visually attractive (read: fugly).

Our plan now is to redesign Splash Stacks to make it better suited for matching the production capabilities of our partners and cost goals of Quirky. We’re taking the redesign so seriously, we recently purchased a new bathtub for testing new prototypes (and, well, general tomfoolery). It hangs out in the kitchen.

So stay tuned for more updates and potential community projects surrounding The Big Splash Stacks Redesign Of 2011. It’s gonna be exciting!

    What we’ve been up to…

Splash Stacks has been an interesting sourcing project. Of course, there are no factories that make foldable bath mats for bathing children [ :) ] so we began sourcing factories that make products with similar materials and processes. This led us to plenty of sporting goods factories, as well as factories that make swimming equipment. After all, the materials needed for surfboards, kickboards, and Splash Stacks are quite similar!

We asked one factory we liked to make a handmade sample prototype for us. Check out the images below. Although the quality is not anywhere near where it will be for the production units, these samples make us confident that this factory is capable of the project.

    Over the next month…

We have selected this factory and the tooling process is underway. We are actually taking an extra tooling step for Splash Stacks: we are making a wooden tool first. The wooden tool will yield near-production quality samples, but only about 20 units. We will use these units to validate the size, best materials, and surface texture for all the necessary parts.

After we test the functionality of these units and make any necessary modifications, we will move straight to the production tool. The wooden tool adds a step into the process upfront, but will shorten our time between the T1 and TFinal production tool and ensure we knock this one out of the park! We look forward to receiving and testing the wooden tooled units on December 17 and kicking off the production tool shortly after that.

Note: Starting this week, we’ll be changing up the format of Production Reports, switching from text-based to video. We just filmed a big group… look for them in the coming week!

Make bathing a breeze while saving your knees with Splash Stacks, now available for a pre-sale price of $34.99 (retail: $39.99) with a threshold of 980 units in the Quirky store.

Remember: community members can earn influence by purchasing in pre-sales, so if you believe in this product enough to commit to it, you can earn a share of the 25 percent up for grabs!

Save your knees at bathtime with Quirky’s Splash Stacks, a convenient bathside cushioned mat. Kneeling on linoleum or tile can really hurt, and leaning on the side of a tub ain’t any better. Splash Stacks lets you sit or kneel in total comfort while bathing your young ones.

    Splash Stacks features:

    - Water-proof foam cushions that cover both the floor and side of the bathtub.

    - Three main padded sections to cushion any surface, from tile to concrete.

    - Folds easily into a secure, compact unit that can easily be transported using the built-in handles.

For Splash Stacks we decided to go with 4 images to help inspire the logo creation process. The images below represent some basic design elements we are currently investigating. Each one tells its own story.

    Image 1 is about gesture

    Image 2 color juxtaposition

    Image 3 simple geometry

    Image 4 material layering

Remember try not to take these product images too literally when designing your logos. Instead, use them as loose starting points or abstract references for your creative process.

    Good luck!
