    Handi-Crafters Kitting Petal Drops

    With all of the excitement around Pivot Power and Cloak, we haven’t blogged much about Petal Drops. Petal Drops is now shipping and I’m thrilled. I love the design and the final product looks beautiful.

    A lot of my personal background is in environmental enterprises and non-profit. So, naturally, I’ve been excited about Petal Drops from the start. I love products that help us re-use waste – in this case water bottles. I’m particularly thrilled that we are using green raw materials, opting for minimalist packaging and sourcing the manufacturing locally. Overall, the carbon footprint and environmental impact is very low.

    Now I have one more reason to love Petal Drops. Our fulfillment house introduced us to a social enterprise to do our kitting work: tying on the label with a string. The non-profit Handi-Crafters employs people with disabilities, and they have found some very capable people to do our kitting work. The US Department of Labor reports that only 55.8% of Americans with disabilities are employed. Employment brings confidence and allows disabled people to fully participate in community and find independence. And, from what we hear, the Handi-Crafters team is enjoying the work we’ve sourced with them.

    One of the reasons I love social enterprises is that they provide market-based solutions to social problems. So, it’s more than just making money and it’s more than just charity. It’s a hybrid that can lead to efficiency and help build a healthy, balanced economy. Sometimes this comes in the form of a for-profit, like the last company I worked for, Tri-State Biodiesel. Sometimes this comes in the form of a non-profit like Handi-Crafters.

    Petal Drop Progress

    Petal Drops tooling is almost complete. Here’s a peek at what the progress looks like.

    You may remember, Petal Drops is being made just down the block from Quirky’s HQ out of 100% sustainable bio-resin.

    We should see first shots of the Petal Drops within 2 weeks or so. Looking on schedule according to the milestone feature on the Petal Drops Page.

    An Interview With Pieter Laga

    This week, we catch up with Pieter Laga, the brains behind Petal Drops, a Quick & Quirky product that recently hit threshold and is now available for just $5.25 in our online store.

    1. What do you do? (job-wise, ya know, when you’re not on Quirky)

    I work at a local advertising agency as a graphic designer and I do some copywriting, motion design and I know a thing or two about interior design.

    2. Where are you from?

    I live in Belgium, a small (yet complex) country in the center of western Europe.

    3. How and when did you think up the idea for Petal Drops?

    After influencing some products, I was confident I could come up with a product concept. I was playing with the idea of rain water — the fact that it’s better for your plants than tap water — and a way to collect it. Using a bottle was a logical step. Only I wasn’t sure about the shape of the funnel… until a few days later, when I thought of plant leaves. You can say form followed function, in this case.

    Seconds away from paying 99 dollars and submitting my well-prepared pitch to Quirky, I saw a banner for the green QnQ challenge and realised, “Hey, my idea is perfect for this!” 24 crazy hours later, Petal Drops was ready.

    4. Had you tried to make this thing on your own already?

    For my idea submission I made dummies out of paper and experimented with the shape and size of the petals. Took some photos that I retouched and colored digitally, and included them in my pitch.

    I couldn’t have made this a success on my own — I’m not a product designer, developer, or marketer. During the summer, I discovered Quirky and immediately fell for the concept. Now that I know Quirky, I keep a small sketchbook to write ideas down. Most of them are silly and will never sell, but I believe I have a quirky idea left.

    5. From who/where do you derive your creative inspiration?

    Books, magazines, documentaries, blogs… I believe a creative person is a curious person.

    At the time I was searching for an idea it was raining for 3 weeks in a row. I guess this was part of the inspiration for Petal Drops. :)

    6. What do you wish Quirky did that it does not already?

    I’d love to see a better organized shop — maybe separate from the main site and very intuitive for (non-member) buyers — focused only on selling our products.

    + More creative, totally unique crazy quirky products that people really want!!!

    7. What’s your favorite deli meat? Cereal?

    I am fond of grey North Sea shrimp from our coast. They’re delicious.

    8. What are some of your quirks?

    OK, I confess… I’m a Quirky addict. :)

    Go “Green” With Petal Drops, Quirky’s 10th Product To Go Into Production

    There’s no better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with the announcement that Quirky’s 10th product — a “green” product, no less! – has met its pre-sale threshold and is ready to go into production. Petal Drops was the community’s answer to Quirky’s call for sustainable, eco-friendly products during a Quick & Quirky throwdown last December. We’re excited to get it made, and tickled by the coincidental launch date!

    Designed by the Quirky community in just 24 hours, Petal Drops is a flower-shaped funnel that fits on top of standard threaded water and soda bottles, providing users with the chance to easily and elegantly capture rain water and repurpose it for watering plants. Rainy days may not seem so bad anymore.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. Set your bottle, with attached Petal Drop, in your desired location and place some pebbles in the bottle if it’s a particularly windy day.

    2. Once it starts to rain, you’ll watch as the petals act as a super funnel, collecting and storing rain water quickly and efficiently in the bottle you were oh-so-close to chucking.

    3. Once the bottle is full, pour out the water wherever you choose… feed that thirsty plant, wash the chalk off your driveway, or give Fido a bath.

    Constructed out of 100% recycled HDPE, Petal Drops’ contemporary flower shape makes it a product you won’t mind placing in your garden or on your patio — it might even blend right in!
