    Welcome, Eugene

    By jess at 11:34 am

With summer slipping away, the time has come for a new wave of interns. Today, we’re pumped to welcome Eugene to our design team. With a fashion designer mom and a computer tech dad, Eugene was destined for industrial design greatness. And he snowboards! We can’t wait to see what his creative mind brings to Quirky.

    Name: Eugene Dennison Kim

Hometown: I was born in LA, raised in Seoul, now in New York.

School: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Design Inspiration: Marc Newson, Naoto Fukasawa, Olafur Eliasson

Fave product you own: MacBook Pro, Android Incredible

What makes you quirky? I am more energetic and productive during winter. I hibernate during summer.

    Ahoy, Laura!

    By jess at 5:22 pm

Laura’s been interning with our design team for a few weeks now. Though she’s a mechanical engineering major, she’s also proven that she can design and sketch with the best of ‘em. We’re excited to see what she cooks up this summer!

    Name: Laura Daigneau

    Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA

    School: Dartmouth

What makes her quirky: I’m a vegetarian who studies philosophy and engineering and am planning on going to design school after I graduate next year. I am a die hard Steelers fan who used to give tours on the “duck” boats in Pittsburgh. I belong to a jewelers’ studio at school where I spend most of my free time hand-making silver pieces. I collect cool glass bottles and am trying to visit every art museum while in New York this summer.

We’re thrilled to welcome yet another design talented intern. Looking forward to seeing the fresh new perspective he’ll bring to our upcoming projects!

    Name: Jeremy Wolf

    School: Carnegie Mellon University

    Hometown: Westfield, New Jersey

What makes him quirky: My horrible jokes.

Meet Danielle, our rad new general intern. This summer, she’ll stay busy learning the ins and outs of the Quirky machine and helping out with everything from community education to customer service to social media and more. She’s a talented gal, and we’re jazzed to have her on board!

    Name: Danielle E. Alvarez

School: Syracuse University, Class of 2010 – Magazine Journalism, Modern Foreign Language

    Hometown: Valhalla, NY

What makes you quirky: I don’t really like cake (or most desserts for that matter) so I’ve always had birthday brownies instead. I make my bed each and every morning. I sometimes find myself apologizing to inantimate objects that I accidentally bump into. I take pictures of my food before I eat it (because of my food blog). Apparently I’m incredibly quirky.

My time at Quirky is coming to an end… it went by so fast!  Working here is fantastic for so many reasons:

I get to design stuff every single day.

I am faced with a challenge each day.

I work with crazy smart and talented people.

    BERTHA.

I start every day off in a good mood (thanks to Nikki and Jess, the “good morning!” committee).

The kitchen is almost always stocked with straws.

We get deliveries of delicious cupcakes, cakes, and chocolates all the time from the awesome community.

and the list goes on and on…

But my most favorite thing about Quirky isn’t confined to the office. My favorite thing is the way Quirky encourages people to express themselves. As the weeks go on I notice that the idea submissions get more and more exciting to scroll through. The submissions have gone from tons of text to text plus hand sketches, computer sketches, movies, Google Sketch up models, mock ups, photos, and other media. Everyone is learning how to express themselves and communicate their ideas effectively and creatively. And the best part is, everyone is learning from each other. Creativity may not come naturally to everyone but everyone has it, and Quirky is finding it and bringing it to life. I think that’s pretty freaking cool. So although I will miss working in the office (miss it like crazy!) I’m glad I don’t have to miss out on my favorite part. See you on the other side, Quirky staffers… and Quirky community, make some room!

    School: Pratt Institute

Your Quirks: I have a dinosaur pet Tamagotchi!

    Meet Aaron And Aron

    By jess at 1:57 pm

Aaron and Aron are our new design interns. The whole same name thang gets a little confusing, so we’ve affectionately renamed them “Utah” (for Aaron’s homestate) and “Han” (he likes being called by his last name ’cause he’s cool like that). Say hello!

    Aaron Saxton (a.k.a. Utah)

    Hometown: Alpine, Utah

    School: Brigham Young University

What makes him quirky: Hmmmmm….what makes me quirky? I have a trademark silly face, appropriately named, “badger face”.

    Aron Han (a.k.a. Han)

    Hometown: Republic of Korea

    School: Parsons School of Design

What makes him quirky: I grew up raising cows and chickens, and I went to a farming high school. Now I work in high-tech industrial design — very different!

    Welcome, Interns!

    By jess at 6:41 pm

We’re happy to welcome two new interns to our design team. Feel free to post some warm ‘n fuzzy comments to make them feel at home!

    Kate

    Hometown: Rockland County, New York.

School: Class of 2009 at Syracuse University with a degree in Industrial and Interaction Design.

What makes her quirky: Every Monday night, I travel crosstown to meet up with random people to play Scrabble. And, I eat my grilled cheese sandwiches inside first!

    Jihoon (a.k.a. JSHIN)

    Home country: Seoul, South Korea.

School: Senior at Parsons School of Design in the Product Design Department.

What makes him quirky: It is hard for me to get people’s jokes. I sometimes create very awkward situations by being serious when someone is joking. Jokes are difficult for me… but that doesn’t mean I hate them!
