Why have a whole day dedicated to a slow-cooling ball of molten rock orbiting a star? Earth is a pretty cool place, when you think about it. It gives us food, water, and energy. Its gravity keeps us from floating into the sun. Earth Day reminds us to pay proper homage to our celestial habitat. Here’s five manufacturers that respect Planet Earth all year round by keeping their business practices lean and green.

    Panasonic

This year, this electronics giant pledged to completely revamp their business and become the #1 green innovation company in the industry. They’ve set a goal to cut C02 emissions by 40 million tons by 2018, and their production of solar cells and fuel cell cogeneration units is making renewable energy accessible to consumers around the world.

    Intel

Intel knows that powering most of the world’s computers can come at a cost. That’s why they’ve taken serious steps towards reducing waste and harmful byproduct from the components they produce. They have high recycling rates for most products and actively work to find alternatives to toxic materials used in production. They also aim for energy efficiency; for the past three years, the EPA has named Intel the largest purchaser of green power among Fortune 500 companies.

    Honda

Honda proudly claims to be the most fuel-efficient auto company in the world. They were a trailblazer in the realm of low-emission and hybrid vehicles, and they continue to set the bar high for environmental responsibility today. They are currently working to popularize the utilization of clean hydrogen fuel for both vehicles and the home.

    Sprint-Nextel

This eco-friendly wireless provider isn’t just setting lofty goals; they’re meeting them. They’re currently recycling over 50% of their products and they’re well on their way to reducing emissions by 15% before 2017. They’re also the only US-based phone provider to offer three “green” phones.

    Nike

If you’re looking to match Nike in an Earth-off, you’ve got some big shoes to fill. They’ve employed widespread programs to ensure minimal emissions, toxicity, and water use across their entire supply chain. And they have prioritized carbon-neutrality internally as well; their Benelux headquarters are completely run on renewable energy.

    Happy 1/11/11, everyone!

My New Year’s Resolution is to make more socially responsible decisions and lessen my environmental impact. While poking around the web to learn more about “greening” my life, I stumbled upon eco-friendly Patagonia’s Footprint Chronicles, which traces the development of products around the globe. Fascinating stuff.

Naturally, watching the chronicles got me thinking about Quirky. I love how an idea can be submitted by a member in, say, Kalamazoo, selected by our team in New York, researched and designed and branded by people around the world, manufactured in China, and then make its way back to a BBB in Kalamazoo.

Our products have equally compelling, global stories, and I’m excited to continue telling them. The Footprint Chronicles is a great example of multimedia storytelling; if you have any other examples, I want to hear ‘em.

Okay, enough with the random Q love. Back to work.

There’s no better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with the announcement that Quirky’s 10th product — a “green” product, no less! – has met its pre-sale threshold and is ready to go into production. Petal Drops was the community’s answer to Quirky’s call for sustainable, eco-friendly products during a Quick & Quirky throwdown last December. We’re excited to get it made, and tickled by the coincidental launch date!

Designed by the Quirky community in just 24 hours, Petal Drops is a flower-shaped funnel that fits on top of standard threaded water and soda bottles, providing users with the chance to easily and elegantly capture rain water and repurpose it for watering plants. Rainy days may not seem so bad anymore.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. Set your bottle, with attached Petal Drop, in your desired location and place some pebbles in the bottle if it’s a particularly windy day.

    2. Once it starts to rain, you’ll watch as the petals act as a super funnel, collecting and storing rain water quickly and efficiently in the bottle you were oh-so-close to chucking.

    3. Once the bottle is full, pour out the water wherever you choose… feed that thirsty plant, wash the chalk off your driveway, or give Fido a bath.

Constructed out of 100% recycled HDPE, Petal Drops’ contemporary flower shape makes it a product you won’t mind placing in your garden or on your patio — it might even blend right in!

Simply set it down in your desired location and place some pebbles or pennies in the bottle if it’s a particularly windy day. Today, while world leaders gather in Copenhagen, the quirky community will show the world the positive impact of eco-efficient product design & collaboration.

Quick & Quirky, our (somewhat) monthly attempt to do the impossible… develop an entire product in 24 hours.

This time we set out with a simple mission: to come together over the next 24 hours and create a socially and environmentally responsible product developed from the ground up with nothing but the most sustainable materials. With any luck this new thingamajig will become a mainstay in the lives of all humans.

    Tall order, we know.

As with all Quick & Quirky events, product idea submissions are FREE– so, no excuses, k?

Rough schedule, so – hop to.
