Today marks the 61st birthday of entrepreneur and inventor Dean Kamen. Although he has created many things, he is best known for bringing us the Segway: the two-wheeled electric vehicle of the future! Exactly when that future will arrive has yet to be determined, but we nevertheless salute his achievement with a list of our favorite Segwayists.

    6) Segway Tourists

Walking tours are so last century. The only true way to experience ancient ruins, sacred relics, and famous monoliths is aboard your Segway. Helmets are (for some reason) required.

    5) Segway Cops

While not exactly the most intimidating of law enforcement vehicles, Segways offer a great way for the boys in blue to cover more ground than they could on foot. We’ve yet to see our first high-speed Segway pursuit, but then again these babies top out at 25 mph.

    4) Segway Polo Players

Didn’t make the cut at this year’s Quidditch tryouts? Grab a mallet and play a few chukkers of Segway Polo. The Sport of Kings just got a lot more kingly.

    3) Justin Bieber

We’ve all been there. There’s a hoard of screaming tweens on your heels, you won’t have a driver’s license for four more years, and you’re way too rich to own a bike. The only way to make your escape is via your trusty Personal Transport. Go Biebs, go!

    2) Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Batman had the Batmobile. Mr. Incredible had the Incredi-Mobile. Paul Blart fights mall crime aboard the Blart-Mobile. Shoplifters beware!

    1) Gob Bluth

Arrested Development’s Gob Bluth was rarely seen without his Segway. For any aspiring magician illusionist, it’s a prerequisite. Sure, a new Segway PT will set you back about five grand, but there’s always money in the Banana Stand.

Assembling a stellar castle or man-sized Star Destroyer gives any kid, young or old, an unparalleled sense of accomplishment. But why be restricted to right angles and rectangular shapes? With Curvables anyone can build curving and organic forms. This 60 piece kit consists of four types of flexible “knuckles” with two, three, four, and five connections respectively, as well as four types of adjoining rods. Mix and match these for whatever you and your child can dream up.

Inspired by curved forms that have revolutionized architecture, Fred Bartels wanted to bring the same modern design aesthetic to children’s building toys. Being design junkies ourselves, we couldn’t help but fall in love with his idea. 1329 influencers answered QDS’s call to help develop the next generation of creative playthings, which you can see for yourself in the Upcoming section today.

    Features:
    -60 piece kit
-4 types of flexible ended knuckle pieces

We’re sure many of you have noticed that the forums recently received a face lift. After listening to your feedback, we determined that a few things needed to be clarified. We now include descriptions below each forum type, just to make sure there isn’t any confusion:

Also new to the forums is Q-News: your one-stop-shop (other than this blog) for company updates, announcements, policy guidelines, and clever missives from Quirky staff. We’ve kicked off the launch of Q-News with our first post Conduct By Users, a frequently requested and happily provided code of conduct for old and new users alike.

We hope this will be a helpful reference if you are ever confused about what is and is not becoming of a Quirky community member.

As always, feel free to shoot us an email at questions@quirky.com if you have any questions or feedback about the new forum layout or the code of conduct.

During our most recent town hall we announced that we would be posting a set of FAQs to address commonly asked questions concerning IP and the Quirky process.

The initial set of FAQs can now be found here.

We also plan to periodically populate this page in the future with additional IP related information that may be useful to the Quirky Community.

As always, our tireless service team stands ready to answer questions you may have at questions@quirky.com.

    Porter inventor, Christine Torpey.

With Porter having just launched in the Quirky store and about to hit retail shelves nationwide, we thought we’d check in with inventor, Christine Torpey, to discuss her experience having her idea go from sketch to store.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was a litigation paralegal for about 13 years in Los Angeles and Columbia, SC. It was an intense job, always preparing for trial, and I really enjoyed it for awhile. One of the last trials I attended involved a horrific child abuse case. It was the most fulfilling case I ever worked on because we were able to permanently get the children out of the situation but it was very emotional and eventually I became “burnt out”. I knew I needed to move on and try a new career path, one that was less adversarial and more fun. It was during this time I came up with my first invention. I took on various jobs, merchandising, serving, sales, so I could pursue my idea and I eventually obtained a patent on it about 11 years ago. I learned alot about the invention and patent process during this time. Currently, I am still involved with coming up with ideas and inventing. I am working on a few research projects and am also assisting my boyfriend with his music career. I enjoy tennis, going to baseball games and I am dabbling in gold panning.

    When did you join Quirky?

It was about 2 years ago.

How did you find out about us?

I discovered Quirky a couple of months after I was laid off because the store I was working in closed down due to a corporate downsizing. I found their ad in my Inventors Digest magazine. I checked out the website and immediately became involved. It was a great outlet for me during my layoff.

When and how did you think up the idea for this product?

It was during the BBQ brief round. I asked my boyfriend who does most of the grilling what some of his problems he encountered while grilling. His biggest problem was that he had to use a big turkey platter to carry all of the essentials to the grill which was located on the first floor and we lived on the second floor. He had to make many trips back and forth to carry all of the essentials, utensils, drink, two paper plates to separate the raw food from the cooked food, paper towels, sauces, etc. He also had to make sure his drink and sauces wouldn’t teeter off the platter. In essence, he suggested to create a tray where he could carry all of his essentials in one trip, and keep the raw food separate from the cooked. I researched the internet on what was out there and there wasn’t much of a selection. I came up the the concept of “Two Tier” or stacked tray so there would be enough room to carry everything.

Had you tried to make this thing on your own already?

    Just a crude prototype.

What do you think of the final product?

I think they did a great job incorporating all of the features that I listed in my presentation.

In your opinion, what is the most innovative product ever invented?

There are many great inventions, but for me personally, the computer and internet because I love to conduct research. Back in the day, you would have to spend hours in the library to get information that you can now access in minutes.

    What inspires you?

Listening to music, people watching, walking and watching movies.

    Any parting words?

I want to thank Ben and his partners for brilliantly creating a unique place where people can bring their ideas and inventions, and making it accessible to everyone worldwide at a nominal fee. The format allows us to contribute and collaborate and be involved not only at the idea phase but the evaluating, branding and design phases of creating a product. I have been through the process and know how extremely tough and very expensive (patent, engineering and lawyer fees, marketing analysis, patent broker, etc.) it is to get an idea to the market. I have been here for about 2 years and it is exciting to watch the growth of the company and how how rapidly it is evolving. I had the pleasure of meeting and observing Ben and some of the Quirky crew. They are a very bright, enthusiastic, friendly, creative, and dedicated bunch. I look forward to the future of Quirky and continuing to contribute to the process. I want to thank them for making my idea into a reality, and for working so hard not only on my idea but for the success of all of our ideas and the company. Thanks to Faris and Jess for their assistance in the design of this tray, and Courtney, my invention ambassador, for keeping me informed of its progress. Lastly, I want to thank Patti D. for Porter’s great name and tagline.

    Here’s to a great future!

Porter is now shipping from the Quirky store.

Devoured a whole clove of garlic before a board meeting?  We haven’t, but we’re certain it happens!  Refresh is here to make sure your mouth is minty fresh whenever you need!  Refresh consists of a travel toothbrush and 14 individually wrapped toothpaste strips enough for a week of dental hygiene.   The toothbrush is conveniently housed in the center of the packaging keeping it safe from contamination.  To access the toothpaste, all you need to do is peel the foil covering, bend the strip, and squeeze.  Keep your teeth sparkly white and your breath fresh while on the move.

Dany Kouri was tired of finding his toothpaste all over his luggage and also wanted to have a convenient all-in-one solution for brushing on the go.  He looked to gum packaging for inspiration and Refresh was born.  We loved the idea!  With the assistance of more than 2911 influencers you will soon be able whip this out and brush at the airport, hotel, or office with Refresh.  Take a gander in the Upcoming section.

    Features:
    -14 individually packaged toothpaste strips
-Toothbrush and holder built-in to package

    Materials:
    -Toothpaste, Cardboard and Plastic

    Dimensions:
    -108mm(4.25in) L x 56mm(2.2in) W x 24mm(.95in) H
