This past weekend, a crack team of Quirky designers and engineers left New York to head to Maker Faire Bay Area. There, at the GE Garages, they were tasked with developing and building the prototype for the Smart Milk Jug in front of a live (and captivated) audience.

Saturday started with a live brainstorm, where the topics ranged from form factor, to use cases to chemistry.

Once the brainstorm concluded, and a design was picked, JJ, our Head of Engineering began working on the 3D renders.

We were lucky enough to have the inventor, Stephanie Burns, on site to share her vision and get hands on in developing her product.

Once Sunday rolled around we got down to the fun stuff. Zach, our master electrical engineer worked on setting up the pH balance sensors and weight sensors.

It wouldn’t be Maker Faire without some kids wearing respirators, working with high-density foam.

We even sent out CAD files to get some pieces 3D printed overnight.

After two days of development we had our first model of the milk jug.

    Calling all San Franciscans!

Join us at the GE Garages at Maker Faire Bay Area this weekend to see the Quirky process in action as we begin building the Smart Milk Jug.

This Saturday, visitors to the Garages will be able to join in a live brainstorm and see the Quirky Design and Engineering Staff sketching out potential product designs, and begin testing concepts using a variety of techniques and technologies.

On Sunday, the staff will continue the process, developing the electronic components and begin construction on the physical prototype.

In addition to the Quirky Milk Lab, there will be a slew of other classes and demonstrations going on at the Garages, so no matter what your interest, make sure to stop by. Check out the full schedule on the GE Garages website.

The GE Garages are located at the East Gate Entrance and will be open from 10 – 8 on Saturday and 10 – 6 on Sunday (all times PDT).

Since The Quirky + GE Project went live last Thursday, we’ve received over 1,500 submissions and votes from all over the world, but in the end, there can only be one winner.

    And the winner is…

Congratulations to Stephanie Burns! Her submission for an intelligent milk container that knows when your milk has actually gone sour caught the eyes and stomachs of the teams here at Quirky and at General Electric.

So, how did we make our decision? When sorting through all of the submissions, we noticed a trend of ideas around preventing food spoilage. Milk, in all its forms, has been a staple of the human diet for thousands of years, and even with all of our modern conveniences, spoiled milk is still a huge problem.

Unlike many foods, whose freshness can be determined on sight alone, the only way to determine if milk is bad (due in part to the containers that it’s sold in) is to smell it, or worse, taste it. Our design and engineering teams feel that solving this problem is a great challenge that can address both cost savings and provide health benefits on a large scale.

Additionally, milk cartons (and bottles) have long been a staple in people’s lives. The milk carton was first patented in 1915, and the “Pure Pak”, as inventor John Van Wormer called it, is still used today. This type of longevity is extremely appealing and gives us the opportunity to create something with the potential to become truly iconic.

We’re excited to get development of this product underway. Get involved in the next step of the process by signing up for a Quirky account (if you haven’t already) and participating in the Research Phase today!

In the past two months we’ve shipped out 844 products for community testing. Despite cardboard box cuts and tape gun attacks, we’re not slowing down.

    Quirky + GE @ SXSW

    By rob at 11:30 am

    GE Garage

We’re thrilled to partner with GE at SXSW this year. GE Garages will give visitors the opportunity learn about invention, prototyping and manufacturing processes first-hand. People will be able to get help with product building, collaborate in hands-on workshops, participate in trainings on high-tech prototyping equipment and learn from leaders in the industry. After Austin, we’ll be heading with GE to Houston and San Francisco. More details on those events forthcoming.

In the meantime, if you’re SXSW bound, swing by and invent with us!

We have to make a slight change to this week’s Town Meeting. Instead of being on Wednesday, the Town Meeting has been moved to Thursday, Feb 16 @ 8pm EST.

Don’t worry, nothing else is changing. You’ll still be brought up to speed by Ben and other members of the Quirky Staff, and there’ll still be a no holds barred Q&A immediately following the presentation. So keep your questions coming either on this post or on this thread in the forum.

    So as a reminder…

What: Quirky Town Meeting + Q&A

    When: Thursday, Feb 16 @ 8pm EST
