    Hello Retail

By ben kaufman at 7:45 pm

Today was a big day. Quirky’s first big shipment left the warehouse headed to an (unfortunately still unnamed) national retailer.

Sure, we’re excited about going to retail… but BEYOND that how could we not be excited about how sexy these boxes look?

We’re getting ready to announce who our new partners are and will (hopefully) share the news with you in the coming weeks. The hold up has been in trying to structure a major announcement and break the news in a major publication. Leaking it to the community might damage the chances of us getting the media excited about “the scoop”.

More to come. Until then….. MAZEL TOV!

Thank you to our community, staff, and partners around the world who have made today possible. Major milestone. But only the beginning.

    I’m going to bed.

    Hello All,

We’re up with Quirky version three on our testing servers and banging through it thoroughly. There are lots of big changes like the addition of multiple line item orders (a proper shopping cart), search, etc. that need to be carefully managed, data-wise.

We’re happy with the way it’s looking but want to be sure we poke around a bit further before rolling it out. We will be here late tonight and there is still a possibility we may roll it out, but most likely we’re shooting for Monday morning at this point.

When we do roll it up, you’ll probably experience a few hours of intermittent downtime — and then we’ll be all up and running.

Mike will keep you posted as things progress through the weekend.

This e-mail was sent to all affected influencers this morning.

    ——————

    Hello there,

In early 2010 we announced a change to our Terms and Conditions which stated that product ideas submitted after 03/01/2010 would carry a different reward structure due to the margin constraints associated with expanding the Quirky business into retail.

At that time, we said that we would try to honor the prior Terms and Conditions for products that were submitted prior to the end of February 2010. And we have.

Over the past few weeks, however, we’ve found ourselves in a tricky situation.

As we’ve worked to increase our distribution, retailers have shown interest in some of our earlier products. This is great news. However, because of the old reward structure associated with these products, we found ourselves deciding between:

    a. Not selling a product at retail

    b. Quirky losing money every time a product is sold at retail

That right there said it all for us. We’ve said all along that Quirky’s biggest strength is the fact that our interests, and our inventor/customer/influencer interests, are always fully aligned. When I found myself having to choose between one or the other, we realized it was time to go back to the root of the issue.

By changing the reward structure on our early products (Product #36 and under) to the same structure as our current and future products, we solve the problem in a fair way.

Retailers that want our products, get them. Inventors and influencers who worked hard on products that have not yet taken off, get a new breath of opportunity.

With this, Quirky can move forward with fully aligned interests between inventors, influencers, and retailers. If a product is great, we all succeed.

This change will go into effect immediately, and I hope to be making a big announcement related to retail distribution within the next week or so.

Thank you, and buckle up — things are about to get interesting.

    Ben

Oh, and the suits told me to say:

You are receiving this correspondence because you have been allocated Influence in one or more Accepted Product Ideas produced on or before 3/1/2010. Prior to March 1, 2010, Quirky allocated 30% of Product Sales Revenue to Users that had been allocated Influence in the underlying Accepted Product Idea. On 3/1/2010, Quirky amended its Terms of Use (the “Current Terms”) to allocate to Users 30% of Product Sales Revenue from retail sales and 10% of all Product Sales Revenue from wholesale sales. This change was necessitated due to the significantly lower gross margins received by Quirky from wholesale sales. Quirky would like to pursue wholesale sales for certain Accepted Product Ideas produced prior to 3/12010, but is only willing to pursue these sales if the resulting Product Sales Revenue is allocated under the Current Terms (e.g. Users would be allocated 10% of the Product Sales Revenue from these wholesale sales). Therefore, unless you or the other Users who have been allocated Influence in these Accepted Product Ideas specifically object in writing prior to 10/12/2010, all future sales by Quirky will be allocated among its Users consistent with the Current Terms. All initial capitalized terms used herein shall have the meaning ascribed thereto in the Current Terms.

Its been under a year and a half since we turned on this here quirky machine, and almost exactly six years since this journey began.

Many of you have heard me tell the story of seeing someone wear one of my first mophie products, and immediately realizing how lucky I was to have experienced the feeling of ‘i had a part in that’. Shortly after, I dreamed of a place where I could involve as many people into the product development process as possible.

Well here we are. Over 60 products in. Getting ready to launch version three of our website. Doubling our design output. 30 employees that walk in the door every day and fight like hell to bring the best ideas in the world to life.

The last year has been about infrastructure building:

The building of an incredible design culture,

state of the art model shop,

    world-class team & culture,

    payment systems,

    support systems,

    manufacturing relationships,

    warehouses,

    influence engines,

    collaborative tools,

    financial war-chest, etc.

While these activities will never end, I’m enamored by the progress we have made. The next few weeks, and following holiday season will hopefully serve as further validation of what was called by the business world  in 2007 as “wildly ambitious”.

Ha, OK- I’m going to stop. This is a totally nonsensical post, because I’m not saying anything. I can’t say anything……. yet. And it pains me so much- because I like telling you all as much as I can.

Just know…… that I know, what is coming… and because of it, I’ve had a weekend filled with retrospective moments.

Buckle up quirks. I hope to share incredible news with you in the coming weeks.

And hey, even if things don’t go as I think they will– we’re on an amazing journey and are all getting better by the day as a result of it.

    Ben Out.

    How freaking cool is this?

  • Tue, Jul 20 2010

    July already?  Time is FLYING.

As we promised back at our first town meeting in April, big changes to the way products are submitted, rated, and evaluated are due to roll out this month.

I’d like to re-iterate the goals behind these changes:

    1. Provide increased transparency to inventors/ideators as to how their idea did
    2. Simplify/clarify our rating criteria to be more useful/self explanatory
    3. Make the submission process more “Question/Answer” based vs. “Title/Description”
    4. Allow us to better bubble up ideas, and get smarter about the way products are chosen.

A good portion of our time over the past few months has been devoted to boiling down the product submission/evaluation process to its core, doing dry runs with different rating/voting procedures internally, and working to create a flow which will make the process delightful for all stakeholders.

So here’s the plan (and a sneak peek of what’s not too far away):

    1. You may have notice Product 0053 has not yet been moved into evaluation. Reason being: we plan to push the first batch of these changes in the next day or two, and would like to wait until that’s done to have voting begin on 53.
    2. Product 0054 will be  the first product for which ideas are taken in the NEW FORMAT (details below).
    3. While product 0053 will carry the newly designed voting/rating mechanisms, Product 0054 will be the first product for which a “0-100″ score will be provided.

    Product Submission:

Beginning with Product 54, product ideas will be submitted with a 140 character description of your product.  You’ll have to categorize your submission into one of the following, and answer the corresponding questions:

Kitchen, Organization, Fitness, Home/Decor, Accessories, Lawn & Garden, Electronics:

Describe Your Problem, Describe Your Solution, Key Features (bullet points), Similar Products/Inspiration

    Home Decor, Toys, Pets, Other:

Describe Your Customer, Describe Your Product, Key Features (bullet points), Similar Products/Inspiration

You’ll be given a preview of your idea in the format it will look when the world feasts its eyes on it, and then you’ll be asked to pony up your 99. Soon, you’ll also be able to save drafts, and edit a product at any time prior to the time evaluation on that idea begins.

    Here’s a sneak peek:

    Product Evaluation:

    Rating  & Voting:

For the time being, voting will remain as 3 votes per member per product evaluation round. However the rating criteria will be switched to:

    1. Uniqueness
    2. Usefulness
    3. Wow Factor
    4. Likeliness to Purchase

Voting & rating will no longer occur on the “product evaluation” page.  Instead, every idea will carry its very own URL & page so that you can directly link friends & followers to your submission.

When you click on an evaluation project, you will see the countdown clock, along with a list of all of the 140 character descriptions of the idea, all which are clickable and will bring you to the “idea detail” page where you can vote, comment, and tab forward/next through that week’s submssions.

    Comments:

One thing we have all observed since the launch of Quirky is how powerful/productive comment threads on the initial ideas can be.

For this reason, we will also be introducing categorized comments beginning with the evaluation of product 53. When you make a comment on a product, you will be asked to classify as:

General, Features, Inspiration & Competition, or Attachments & Assets

Just imagine seeing an idea and thinking “that exists already” you can sort the comments by competition and see what other members are saying about the competitive landscape, instead of reading through all 238 comments in the thread.

    Scores & Decisions:

As I stated above, all ideas beginning with  those submitted into Product 0054 will receive a 0-100 score:

Up to 50 Points: based upon community reaction (votes/comments/ratings):

The top 25% of the community reacted ideas will then move into the hopper for the staff to evaluate. Ideas that are not in the top 25% based upon community reaction will not be evaluated by our staff. The final score on these ideas will just be a reflection of the community reaction.

Up to 20 Points: based upon Quirky employee & retail partner reaction (votes/ratings that will occur internally):

A “deep dive” will then be done on the top 5 ideas (based upon score after community & employee input). Ideas that are not one of the top five will receive their final score, which will just be the addition of the community points, plus the internal points.

The “deep dive” on the top 5 will look at 3 major areas:

Up to 10 Points: based upon “Design Potential”:

How much potential does this product have to WOW?

Do we feel this idea provides us with the opportunity to design something distinctive so we can stand out from the market?

Up to 10 Points: based upon “Viability”:

Could we price at a competitive level while still maintaining the margin we need to pay the community, expenses, etc?

Intellectual Property / Uniqueness Concerns? (input from our legal team)

Up to 10 Points: based upon “Market Potential”:

What is the market potential for indirect sales? (input from our retail partners around the world)

What is the potential for direct sales? (input from our SEO/SEM team)

Once all the scoring is complete, the winner will be announced (the winner will now always be the top scored idea), and all ideas will carry a 0-100 score next to them.  Depending upon how far each idea got in the evaluation process, you’ll be able to see how many points it recieved in each one of the above 5 areas.

As you’ll see, only the top 5 ideas are going to be eligible for the full 100 points.

Sneak peek of the product detail page with the final point allocation:

    Everybody sees

    and everyone agrees

That you and I were wrong

And it’s been that way too long

    Take it as it comes

and be thankful when its done

There’s so many ways to act

And there’s many shades of black

There’s so many shades of black

There’s so many shades of black

We’re letting the Raconteurs bring this project to a close for us.   All for good reason.

The last expected ship date came and went due to the wildest of errors.  Despite our relentless efforts of documentation (color guides, reiteration of colors next to each part listed on our PO, etc) one of our suppliers totally got the colors wrong.   What was supposed to be a super clear, easy to understand process was totally botched.

The Black Cloaks, which were expected to ship last week were photographed and caught at the last minute by our QA staff on the ground at the factory (big ups to Kyle, Cyrus, Debbie & Andy).

“REJECTED!” we said to Phil (the owner of the factory that sucks) in our best NBA announcer voice.

The Inner cover was not the dark black we had intended, instead it was the light gray we had intended for the portrait stand.

Did it look horrible? No, not exactly — but it’s not what we intended, so we took the time to get it right.

Reproducing the units that had been created thus far according to the color spec that had been in our suppliers hands for months (confirmed & signed off on by multiple team members both here and on the ground in Asia).

How this mis-match happened still baffles us.

There are, in fact, many shades of black.  We at Quirky are very particular about our black.

On Sunday we got our first glimpse into fully assembled, fully packaged Cloaks heading our way.

The shipping process will be staggered, as planned and the black hiccup cost us about 7-10 days.

Obviously, delays are the last thing we are looking for at this point.  But, when faced with the question of delaying a shipment by a week, or shipping a better product- we will always choose the latter.

The good news is, we’re through it and the first batch of Cloaks are on their way here – and from there (hopefully) it’ll be smooth sailing.

Mike McCoy is on his way up to NYC tomorrow to be around for the launch.  Our warehouse has already started to tape together the boxes that the Cloaks will ship to consumers in so that all they’ll have to do is pick & label.  FedEx is standing by ready to rock your world… and, of course, our Sourcing, QA, and logistics teams are all standing by, ready to get their first full nights sleep in months.

    Ah, product development.
