The days of figuring out where you’re gonna assign your 3 votes in Quirky Product Evaluation are over.
Starting today, you’ll be given unlimited votes for the Product Evaluation phase. Woohoo!
However, there is a caveat: the amount of influence you can earn from voting is directly tied to how many votes you cast.
What does this mean? Well, say you vote for a winning idea. You’ll receive more influence if you only voted for two ideas in the round and less influence if you voted for 20.
Moral of the story? Use your votes wisely! We’re counting on you to bubble up the best ideas each week. With great power comes great responsibility. Do us proud.

This is what I have mentioned in forums past, but just using the 3 votes given. Cool idea to try it out. Any ideas on how the breakdown of what each vote would be worth or is that also dependent upon the total community votes used? Would that mean that if a few people went crazy and voted for everything then the percentage per vote is lowered for the whole community? Would love to know how the calculations are determined.

Do we still get influence for ratings?
Can you give us an example of the influence breakdown?

Love Love LOVE this idea! I kind of feel like I’m in Vegas now. ; )

Hello Everybody!
New rules. Well,… I like it

is voting for myself self-defeating?
will | 11/01/2010 6:07 PM
With over 359 ideas this week alone, and 150 ideas in the other category, the biggest drawback to quirky is the fact that it is not conducive to “truly solid” evaluation… if i started going through every idea, and spent 15 seconds on each idea, it would take TWO HOURS 7635 (seconds) to fairly go through all ideas in a week, for both categories.
I think there needs to be a cap for 100 ideas or something like that. How can this model be sustainable otherwise? Please comment, quirky.
KL | 11/01/2010 9:19 PM
I agree with Will, 509 ideas to evaluate in one week is a bit ridiculous!
Tinkrsup | 11/02/2010 7:20 AM
I have to agree with Will, this Parade magazine article really spawned a ton of ideas and exposure of Quirky to the world, BUT, it also spawned a ton of ideas that when I look at them, I think to myself “HUH?”. Also, any thoughts on limiting the number of times an idea can be resubmitted? or something that eliminates multiple posting or comments?
TInkrsup | 11/02/2010 7:23 AM
Will, to address your “solid evaluation” concerns. With tons more people on this site, it would lead to a true solid evaluation, as more votes, more products unlimited votes, the most voted for will still rise to the top, just by the amount of votes that will be cast.

Community growth can be scary, I get ya. But with more ideas comes better ones! Let’s keep talking about this. I hope you all can join us tonight for our Quirky Town Meeting. After we get our presentations out of the way, we’ll be having a no-holds-barred Q&A session. If you can’t make it, post your questions on the forum: http://www.quirky.com/forums/topic/1593

I personally think each new member should get one reduced price entry at let’s say $25 and then the rest are back to $100 each. Some may think that this keeps ideas from getting put in but it’s only $100 and the market research they get is by far more than that…plus the enlightenment that their idea could suck and they won’t need more of their own time and money plus family and friends investments to play with their “dog” and stroke their ego. This way only ideas that have some thought in them get submitted. No more “I think we should design an electric car that can cook spaghetti and meatballs” or “I think we should design a flat panel plasma display for your computer.” Tired of seeing things that exist in several forms already but they add nothing. And if the person puts there is no idea like this or no competition to this item immediately bill them a $250 charge for laziness because there is always something that will compete in some way unless you are far ahead of the curve meaning there is not a substantial market built and waiting several years for one to occur is not a quirky thing.
Narinch | 11/04/2010 10:01 PM
New to Quirky…is it better to submit an idea at beginning of week, to increase chances of more votes? I’m not sure if I should submit an idea now, when there is only 3 days left to vote.
Thanks
timothymh | 11/06/2010 8:48 PM
@Narinch That is definitely something to take into consideration, although some people sort by “Most Recent”. So it’s up to you.
stephanie4992 | 11/07/2010 11:01 PM
Now that there is unlimited voting, it would really be great to still be able to see what we voted on. That way we can keep track of how many votes and what we voted on.
Can we do this please?
mario rodriguez | 11/09/2010 8:56 PM
I agree with will. It’s getting more difficult to do a throughout consideration of the ideas submitted because of the volume. I would go for 75 Ideas per product, it would allow users to do a more detailed discussion in the comments about the product. Ideas?

Hi people! Totally new to Quirkie So new I can’t spell it yet. Looking forward to becoming VERY involved. Still sorting out the Quirky processes and community. I was made aware of the company/Site last night Nov. 9th. Today’s the 10th… I’m after it. Tips tricks hints clues?? Throw them at me!! Russell Notestine

So, how does the rating thing work exactly? I’m so lost.
erinlale | 11/15/2010 1:32 PM
How about if the new product to evaluate notice said what category the product was in so evaluators could go straight to a product type they might be interested in, like hobbyists could evaluate something for their hobby and ignore product types they know nothing about.
carmen88 | 11/22/2010 3:34 AM
Hi, im fairly new to Quirky and i just have to know… when rating a product its 1-5 ok is 1 best and 5 worst or vise versa???? I realy need to know because i rated a couple products and i realy hope i didnt mess up!
nef | 11/22/2010 2:20 PM
I’m still trying to figuring out how to cast a vote, does not seem intuitive at all. Can’t find where to do it once I find a product I really like. Why not be able to vote for a product on their page?
Donald Marks | 11/28/2010 7:58 PM
Still trying to “learn the system” Guess I am just computer challenged!

I missed the submission date for farmers market bag: With wide cushion handles (possibly nilon as its strong and comfy ref: a lifting sling) A farmers market bag that has no internal seems, non creasing and slippery so its easy to clean. It should also have a socailly responsible message or possibly a phrase from latin like dialecticus or better yet eloquent old latin, or a rash statement like bio accumulative. Or you are what you eat
Robert Reed | 12/03/2010 1:28 PM
The whole Quirky creative process could be accelerated by adding a browser function in the comment boxes. This would allow drawings and photos to be introduced with the comments. Pictures are worth thousands of words. I’m relatively new to the Quirky community and I feel a bit stifled sometimes trying to verbalize my ideas. Some of my commentsinl are so wordy that I feel the reader might get lost or bored before they finish. A drawing or two would make it a lot easier to get our points across.
I have an idea | 12/05/2010 4:06 AM
let’s create 2 stage voting process:
1. group voting to get 1 or 2 or 3 best idea from each group of product
2. final voting for those best idea
to make sure enough votes on each stage, please change the influence rule
Janine Ortiz | 12/18/2010 4:26 PM
I am a neonate to quirky but have to say – with Spiderman/Peter Parker on board I may have to look into this more!
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
Wentworth Alumni | 12/28/2010 7:05 PM
My opinion is that there should be a very small royalty paid to each person who votes for the top product; less if they vote for more products and if they contribute then they could get a larger portion. This would serve to motivate selection of the best product and would also remove the criteria of contribution so that inventions near product state worthy of top spot can get to the top even if no contributions were made. Another benefit of this is that it would add the aspect of a market study

Too many ideas. You should definitely play around with the submission fee until you get it down to max 50 per week. I don’t know if $100 is too high or not high enough…!
amy wyatt | 01/28/2011 8:24 PM
I don’t think you should mess at all with the submission fee, That’s one of the reasons I think quirky works is that the price to play or get your shot is not a burden on the community. I like that the votes are unlimited, that gives us credit as compitent community members who can be trusted and accountable to our true belief. I also think theres a sort of pack going on here and that friends sometimes vote for friends. I’m not gonna vote for your idea if I don’t like it, I will hope that it wins, and through time and reading the replys as the week goes on I might choose to change my vote if a point is brought up that would make me believe in the product more than I had in the beginning. My other gripe is the amount of items per round that we have to comment, vote , and rate, It’s gonna cause me trouble in my relationship and I’m not cleaning my house as much. Don’t get me wrong i love being involved in quirky community, It’s an awesome opportunity, so My solution is that your guys should pre judge the weeks round of submissions, and only allow the ones in that you absolutely would consider in the actual design and marketing phase, please don’t waste our time any more than you’d want your time wasted. If you choose not to allow someones submission. You could offer them a free submission for the next weeks round. That alone would cause me to really think about my submission or submissions before I put them in because if you choose to drop an idea that would knock out the chance to be a part of the round for that particular week . It’s all about currency in life, Our currency is to get a submission that we can afford and to get it seen, Your currency is to keep us happy and to give you really good thought provoking ideas to use. It’s a win win if it’s done right. Thanks to all who read and consider this.
vanessa | 01/29/2011 2:48 PM
hi im very new did submit a product and it appeared but now what happens if it wins the votes who contacts us and then what? i dont get any of this to be honest lol
mark henry | 02/22/2011 11:12 PM
Yes, I say the less votes the better. Decide on one or two submissions with which you have the background necessary to make a difference to take them to the next level. Anything less is not productive for you, the inventor or Quirky.
Idea Trunk | 03/03/2011 12:22 PM
1) Submitting thoughtful, idea modifying comments takes time. I’d like to see additional incentive for providing idea modifying comments whether they are implemented or not.
I’m a newbie, is there a strategy for when in the process to submit idea-modifying comments?
2) I’d like a View All + Full View feature. I’m not comfortable bypassing an idea based on a 140 word description, so I have to open and close every idea I view, which is all of them. My connection is slow so I’d like to be view while the others are opening.
3) I like the $10 submission fee. I would submit if the fee was $50 plus. Lets face it we are not likely to self produce these ideas, so best to get the free flow of ideas going and select from the best as a group. Being able to search past submission might cut down on duplicates, not sure I totally understand Q’s reason for not allowing this.
Idea Trunk | 03/03/2011 12:24 PM
Oop, Typo….
I **NOT** would submit if the fee was $50 plus.
Idea Trunk | 03/03/2011 12:25 PM
I would *NOT** submit if the fee was $50 plus. Sorry, head-cold.
judith tate | 03/14/2011 5:01 PM
yes, yes yes
Light Sage | 04/22/2011 8:40 PM
Please do not limit the entries… there is a payoff and for that payoff we must work! More ideas is what this is all about! $10 is a really very amazing cost for participating; very democratic and accessible… I do wonder what would happen with a steeper submit fee… would the volume decrease? if the volume decreased, would the quality increase? I’d favor a test.
cozziebjones | 05/16/2011 7:42 PM
I am new at this and I have voted for four ideals. So, I hope I am understanding how influnce goes. If one of the four that I have voted on is chosen to move to the next phase – then I win influence and subsequently will receive income? If this is not correct please re-write for this novice to try and understand. Thank you.
Jennifer Meissner | 08/03/2011 1:13 PM
I love the $10 entry fee. Makes it a very reasonable “risk” to take to put your idea out there. I have tried to sort by “most active” but it doesn’t seem to work. Is it Safari? That would be a very nice option to help sort through ideas faster.
brenttward | 08/12/2011 11:33 AM
Nice feature. Would be great if you guys would show (like the Iowa Electronic Markets approach) the voting levels for all products in a chart that could be sorted by newest, most votes, least votes, etc. Might help those of us voting help to further try to “weed out” the wheat from the chaff.
dave jr | 09/03/2011 4:52 PM
How do you prevent SPAM voting? i.e. Knuckleheads that vote for 100% of the inventions or develop vote-bots just to up their vote count. I would hope you base the voting influence score on the QUALITY of the vote. i.e. votes for winners score big… Votes for ideas that come out in the bottom 25% cancel out points you earn from voting for those that come out in the top 25%…. etc. Or some similar algorithm. This way you encourage lots of voting but only for ideas people really like. It discourages thoughtless or auto-voting because SPAMed votes for low ranking ideas automatically cancel out those earned for votes cast for highrankng ideas thus penalizing SPAM votere. It also forces people to actualy think about the ideas and vote for ones they truly like and come back to encourage and contribute to the ones they voted for because they want them to win or at least score high.
Paul r | 09/03/2011 9:50 PM
I agree with Will also. The dream team of quirky employees should get it down to 100 ideas. You guys are the experts, unfortunately hundreds of the ideas are simply not going to make it..
kdemick | 09/29/2011 7:48 PM
I don’t like the voting part…so say someone places a really dumb idea..has a million (I’m a social nerd and don’t have a life) friends….and they all vote..cuz the ides is going to get them on Rachel Ray and be millionaires!! Who really wins? The great idea with 10 votes or the dumb idea with 100 votes? Who really decides? Most ideas are dumb, already in production, or would never work.
Laurie Druzak | 10/04/2011 9:30 PM
When I signed on I didn’t know that this required all this work! I am a busy person and I feel as though I made a bad decision at this point! I will be keeping an eye on this..
