Starting with Product 49, we will be awarding influence for “influential comments”. What makes a comment “influential” you ask? Happy to explain.
The Word on Comment Influence (care of the Quirky Design Staff)
- Consider comment influence a “badge of honor.” It will be earned sporadically and will only be awarded for comments with substantial direct effect on the outcome of the design.
- Comment influence will only be awarded for comments made on winning submissions for a particular phase.
- If there does happen to be more than one post with similar influence-earning content, the earliest post will receive the comment influence.
- If you see that someone in your thread has earned comment influence, please be respectful and don’t try to claim that you deserve it too.
- Influence-earning potential will vary from project to project, depending on the number of voters, the amount of rating influence distributed, the number of influential comments selected, etc. etc. The maximum amount of influence you can earn from a comment is 25 percent of the total share allotted to that project.
As with any new feature roll out, there are bound to be questions and concerns with the initial implementation. We welcome your feedback!

Curious if the winning idea is a resubmission are you going to look back at all the comments from the previous time(s) it’s been submitted? It seems like when an idea is resubmitted it gets less comments and a lot of the improvement comments are not posted again. Should we post comments we think are influential to the idea again?

Great question! We will only mark a comment influential if it’s posted in that round.

i like the comments section that techcrunch has recently adopted that allows visitors to easily give a thumbs up if they like the mention –> you can see the ones that are “popular”
have you guys thought about adopting a hackernews-type system? they’ve done a phenomenal job of incentivizing the best comments

Ugh. Sorry guys, this just complicates an already irritating and contentious issue. Why add another INFLUENCE layer? The Voting/Evaluation phase should be just an UP or DOWN vote to select the winning idea. Influence is supposed to be for all of the “It needs to be…” and “You shoud add…” stuff – you know: INFLUENCE. I see no end of people whining that they said this or that before so-and-so did – or that someone elses’ influence is a rip-off of their earlier “comment-influence. And, am I wrong or will this extra influnce whittle-down the overall percentages even further? If so, does this drive up the final per-unit cost?
